- Florida sees nearly 528 Google searches per 100,000 residents for car modifications and $556.36 per capita spending on recreational vehicles.
- Window tinting emerges as the most popular car modification across all states, followed by car wraps and cold air intakes.
- New York ranks last with only 275 Google searches per 100,000 residents and $112.20 per capita spending on vehicle modifications.
A new study by 0-60 Specs, a leading source of vehicle performance data, has revealed which U.S. states are most likely to modify their cars based on Google searches and consumer spending patterns.
The analysis combined Google search data for car modification terms with Personal Consumption Expenditure (PCE) figures on sports and recreational vehicles, awarding each state a score out of 100.
Florida claims the top position with a score of 98.89 out of 100, driven by 527.91 searches per 100,000 residents and a PCE per capita of $556.36.
With over 119,000 monthly searches for car modification terms, Floridians show the highest interest in customizing their vehicles, particularly with window tints which account for 75,846 monthly searches.
Arizona secures second place with an index score of 88.99 and 510.72 searches per 100,000 residents. Like Florida, Arizona's hot climate likely contributes to its residents' interest in window tinting, which represents 23,079 monthly searches.
Oregon ranks third with a score of 74.99, despite having fewer searches per capita (396.03) than some higher-ranked states. Oregon's high ranking is largely due to its $520.41 per capita spending on sports and recreational vehicles, the third-highest.
Nevada follows in fourth place with a score of 73.78 and 480.28 searches per 100,000 residents. The state records 15,340 monthly Google searches for car modification terms, with window tinting being the most popular choice.
Utah rounds out the top five with a score of 73.52, bolstered by its impressive $501.41 per capita spending on recreational vehicles, the fifth-highest in the nation. Utah residents make 13,467 monthly searches for car modifications.
South Carolina ranks sixth with a score of 71.26 and 443.43 searches per 100,000 residents. The state shows strong interest in car modifications with 23,828 monthly searches across all terms.
Idaho claims seventh place with a score of 70.23, distinguished by having the highest PCE per capita at $576.93. Despite ranking 24th in searches per 100,000 residents (348.33), Idaho's high spending on recreational vehicles elevates its overall ranking.
Colorado secures eighth place with a score of 69.13 and 459.87 searches per 100,000 residents. Coloradans make 27,029 monthly searches for car modifications, with window tinting leading the way at 16,236 searches.
Washington ranks ninth with a score of 67.97 and a notable $365.95 per capita spending on recreational vehicles. The state records 32,700 monthly Google searches.
Georgia completes the top ten with a score of 67.36 and 476.71 searches per 100,000 residents. Georgians conduct 52,577 monthly searches for car modifications, with window tinting being the most popular at 30,858 searches.

At the other end of the scale, New York ranks last with a score of just 8.08, with just 275.05 searches per 100,000 residents, the second-lowest rate in the country. New Yorkers spend just $112.20 per capita on sports and recreational vehicles.
Kansas comes in 49th place with a score of 15.44 and 302.76 searches per 100,000 residents. The state's low $122.87 per capita spending on recreational vehicles contributes to its position near the bottom of the rankings.
Massachusetts ranks 48th with a score of 16.46 and 279.83 searches per 100,000 residents. Despite being home to many car enthusiasts, Massachusetts residents search for car modifications at lower rates than most other states.
Hawaii holds the 47th position with a score of 17.72. The island state records 330.73 searches per 100,000 residents but has the second-lowest PCE per capita at just $113.72, likely due to limited driving spaces and strict vehicle modification laws.
Rhode Island, the smallest state by area, ranks 46th with an index score of 22.53. The state records 285.93 searches per 100,000 residents and spends $169.81 per capita on recreational vehicles.

The data reveals consistent patterns in the types of modifications Americans are searching for. Window tinting ranks as the most popular modification in every state, accounting for about 60% of all car modification searches nationwide. Car wraps are the second most popular modification, while cold air intakes consistently rank third.
Emir Bacic, Owner of 0-60 Specs, commented on the findings:
"The regional differences in car modification interests provide fascinating insights into American car culture. In southern states with intense sunshine, we see practical modifications like window tinting dominating searches, while car wraps remain popular across the country for those looking to personalize their vehicles.
"What's interesting is that regardless of a state's overall ranking, window tinting consistently emerges as the top modification search. This suggests that across different regions and climates, Americans prioritize comfort and privacy in their vehicles.”
Methodology: Monthly average search volume data was taken from Google Keyword Planner based on searches over the 12 months between June 2024 and May 2025 to reveal the top rankings with average monthly search volume. The states searching the most about car mods according to Google were analyzed based on searches for: best [mod], how to do [mod] for my car, cheap [mod], how to install [mod], etc.
The combined search volume for each state was calculated, and then used to rank from highest number of average monthly searches to lowest. This data was then combined with the Personal Consumption Expenditure spent on Sports and Recreational Vehicles, sourced from the Bureau of Economic Analysis, to create an index ranking. This index score suggests which states are most likely to modify their cars.
