Saturday named most dangerous day to drive in Florida with 1,739 collisions

Posted
  • Saturday tops the list as Florida's most hazardous driving day with 1,739 collisions recorded, followed by Sunday with 1,598 incidents

  • Weekend driving accounts for 3,337 crashes, representing 33.54% of all Florida traffic collisions

  • Wednesday emerges as the safest day for Florida drivers with only 1,219 collisions, 14% below the daily average

A new study has identified Saturday as the most dangerous day to drive on Florida roads, with significantly higher collision rates than any other day of the week. The analysis, conducted by Metropolitan Shuttle, examined traffic collision data across Florida to determine which days posed the greatest risk to drivers.

According to the findings, Saturday recorded 1,739 collisions across Florida, making it the most hazardous day for motorists in the state. This represents 17.48% of all weekly traffic incidents and exceeds the daily average by approximately 22%.

Sunday ranked as the second most dangerous day with 1,598 recorded collisions, only slightly lower than Saturday's total. The data shows a clear weekend pattern, with both Saturday and Sunday showing higher risk levels than weekdays.

The combined weekend total of 3,337 collisions represents more than one-third of all weekly traffic incidents in Florida. This suggests factors such as recreational driving, social activities, and potentially impaired driving contribute to the increased risk.

In contrast, Wednesday emerged as the safest driving day in Florida with just 1,219 collisions, approximately 14% below the daily average.

The data reveals a concerning upward trend as the week progresses. From the Wednesday low point, collision numbers steadily increase through Thursday (1,267), and Friday (1,556) before the weekend.

Monday defies the weekly progression pattern with 1,335 collisions, making it more dangerous than both Tuesday and Wednesday despite following the high-risk weekend. This suggests a potential "Monday effect" where drivers are tired or otherwise impaired, while Tuesday has 1,237 collisions recorded.

The total weekly count of 9,951 averages approximately 1,421 crashes per day across Florida, highlighting the overall road safety challenge facing the state despite the day-to-day variations.

Glenn Orloff, CEO of Metropolitan Shuttle commented on the findings:

"The statistics show a clear pattern of increased risk during weekend driving in Florida. With Saturday collision numbers 22% higher than the average day, we recommend that travelers plan their journeys with these risk factors in mind.

"The stark difference between weekday and weekend collision rates underscores the importance of making informed choices about when to travel. Drivers should consider adjusting non-essential travel plans to avoid the highest-risk days when possible. For those who must travel on Sundays, extra caution is advised, particularly during peak hours.”

Methodology: Data was gathered from the NHTSA Fatality and Injury Reporting Tool on the number of fatal crashes on each day of the week. The days were then ranked from most to least crashes.
