A 68-year-old Fanning Springs man died after his bicycle was struck by an SUV Wednesday night in Alachua County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at approximately 8:09 pm near the intersection of Northwest 75th Street, also known as Tower Road, and Northwest Fifth Place.

According to the FHP report, an SUV driven by a 30-year-old Lake City woman was traveling south on Northwest 75th Street when it collided with a bicycle in the roadway.

The impact separated the rider from the bicycle. The bicyclist landed in the roadway, while the bicycle entered the northbound lanes of Northwest 75th Street and was run over by a second SUV driven by a 45-year-old Gainesville woman.

The bicyclist was transported from the scene with incapacitating injuries and later died at a hospital.

The first SUV also carried a female passenger and two children, ages 1 and 3. FHP reported no injuries to either driver or any of the passengers.

The crash remains under investigation. FHP said it will release additional information as it becomes available.
