A 64-year-old Sebring woman was killed, and a 19-year-old Lake Placid man was critically injured Tuesday night in a head-on collision on US-27 in Highlands County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at approximately 8:18 p.m. north of Tauchens Road. Troopers said the Lake Placid man was driving a 2005 Dodge pickup south on US-27 as the Sebring woman drove a 2019 Toyota sedan north in the outside lane.

According to the FHP report, the pickup driver lost control, traveled off the roadway and entered the west paved shoulder. The pickup then crossed both southbound lanes, traveled through the median and entered the northbound lanes.

The front of the pickup collided with the front of the Toyota, troopers said. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, while the pickup driver was taken to an area hospital with critical injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
