Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol responded to a multi-vehicle collision this morning in Brevard County that resulted in the death of a driver.
According to the FHP report, at approximately 12:01 am, a 2010 Lexus ES350 driven by a 19-year-old Melbourne woman and a 1995 Semi-Truck with a trailer driven by a 38-year-old Palm Bay man were traveling southbound on Interstate 95 approaching Pineda Causeway (mile marker 188) in the outside lane.
Witnesses told the FHP that the first vehicle was traveling above the posted speed limit and weaving through traffic. As it approached, the first vehicle failed to stop for the second vehicle, which was traveling ahead, and the front of the first vehicle struck the rear of the second vehicle.
After the crash, the first vehicle rotated and came to a final rest partially in the outside lane and outside shoulder. The second vehicle came to a controlled stop on the outside shoulder.
The first vehicle's driver exited, and a third vehicle, a 2004 Ford F-250 driven by a 32-year-old West Palm Beach man, traveling southbound on I-95, was unable to avoid the first vehicle and, after swerving to attempt to miss it, collided with its rear. After the collision, the third vehicle also collided with the driver.
After the collisions, the third vehicle's driver overcorrected, ran off the roadway and collided with a light pole.
As it approached, a fourth vehicle (a 2023 Toyota Camry driven by a 75-year-old Vero Beach man) could not avoid the first vehicle's driver, now lying in the roadway. As a result, the fourth vehicle struck her.
The driver of the first vehicle was pronounced deceased on the scene.
One passenger in the first vehicle, a 16-year-old male), was transported to Viera Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash remains under investigation.
The FHP did not release the names of the drivers or passengers involved in the crash.
