Breaking News Overnight: Pedestrian hit and killed by vehicle in Highlands County

A woman was killed early Saturday after being struck by a car while standing in a travel lane of U.S. 27 in Highlands County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The collision occurred at approximately 2:49 am. on U.S. 27, also designated State Road 25, south of Billy Martin Road in Avon Park.
According to the FHP crash report, a blue Honda Civic driven by Mia Jasmine Rey-Mejia was traveling south in the highway’s right lane. An unidentified adult woman was standing in that lane directly in the vehicle’s path.
The front of the Civic struck the pedestrian, throwing her onto the hood and into the windshield, the report stated.
Highlands County EMS personnel pronounced the woman dead at the scene. Authorities had not confirmed her identity as of the report's release.
The FHP Traffic Homicide Unit continues to investigate the collision. No additional information was immediately available.
