An 80-year-old Arcadia woman died after her car left State Road 31 and struck a fence and a tree in DeSoto County on Nov. 1, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The single-vehicle crash occurred at approximately 1:40 pm north of County Road 760A.
The woman was driving a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu northbound when she attempted to pass a slower vehicle, troopers said. She entered the southbound travel lane before returning to the northbound lane.
As the Malibu reentered the northbound lane, the woman lost control. The car traveled off the right side of the roadway and collided with a fence and a tree.
The driver, who was alone in the car, suffered serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital. She was later pronounced dead.
FHP reported rainy weather and wet roads at the time of the crash. The crash remains under investigation.
