Posted

Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol responded to a three-vehicle collision in Glades County last night that resulted in the death of a driver.

According to the FHP report, at approximately 7:24 pm a sport utility vehicle driven by a 59-year-old Okeechobee woman was traveling south on State Road 78 near Roberson Drive. At the same time, a sedan driven by a 21-year-old Naples woman heading north on SR-78 and a semi-tractor trailer driven by a 54-year-old Hialeah man directly behind the second vehicle.

As they approached, the first vehicle crossed over the broken painted yellow center lines and traveled into the direct path of travel for the second and third vehicles.

The second vehicle swerved left into the southbound lane in an attempt to avoid a collision. However, the first vehicle closed the distance, and they collided.

This action caused the second vehicle to rotate, coming to a final rest, partly on the grass shoulder and in the southbound travel lane of SR-78.

The front of the third vehicle then collided with the front left portion of the first, and it rotated and exited the roadway onto the grass shoulder of the southbound side of SR-78.

The third vehicle sustained disabling damage to the front drive axle. It veered into the southbound lane and traveled northwest, coming to a final rest on the grass shoulder on the southbound side of SR-78, just north of the second vehicle.

According to the FHP report, the driver of the first vehicle was pronounced deceased, while the drivers of the second and third vehicles reported no injuries.

The FHP did not release the names of the drivers involved in the collision.
