Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol responded to a three-vehicle collision yesterday in Volusia County that resulted in the death of a motorcyclist.
According to the FHP report, at approximately 3:44 pm, a 2000 Yamaha XV-1600 Roadstar motorcycle driven by a 25-year-old man from DeLand was traveling westbound on State Road 40 approaching Conifer Lane.
At the same time, a 2015 Nissan Altima driven by a 48-year-old St. Johns woman was stopped in the westbound lane of State Road 40 at the intersection of Conifer Lane, waiting to make a left turn.
A third vehicle (a 2016 GMC Terrain driven by a 60-year-old Crescent City woman) was also traveling westbound on SR-40 approaching Conifer Lane.
As the motorcyclist approached, he failed to stop for the second vehicle. As a result, the front of the motorcycle struck the second vehicle's rear. The impact caused the motorcyclist to be thrown off the motorcycle.
The third vehicle swerved to the left to avoid the motorcyclist but could not and struck the motorcycle and its rider.
The third vehicle continued off the roadway and came to rest in a ditch.
The motorcyclist was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash.
No other injuries were reported to the FHP.
The crash remains under investigation.
The FHP did not release the names of the drivers or motorcyclist involved in the collision.
