Three men were hospitalized early Sunday morning after a sport utility vehicle crashed into an overpass guardrail along Interstate 95 in Nassau County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at approximately 5:31 am on near the intersection of I-95 and County Road 108.
According to the crash report, a 24-year-old man from Yulee was driving northbound on I-95 when the vehicle drifted out of the right travel lane and onto the shoulder. The SUV continued along the shoulder before traveling up an embankment and striking the concrete guardrail of the County Road 108 overpass.
After the impact, the vehicle overturned and came to rest upside down on top of the guardrail along the right shoulder of the interstate.
All three occupants were transported to the hospital with injuries. The driver suffered serious injuries, while a 27-year-old passenger from Jacksonville was listed in critical condition. A second passenger, a 33-year-old man from Fernandina Beach, sustained serious injuries.
The crash also caused significant damage to the overpass guardrail, prompting the closure of County Road 108 in both directions at the overpass. Florida Department of Transportation crews were on scene making repairs, and motorists were advised to use caution and seek alternate routes until the roadway reopens.
The crash remains under investigation.
The FHP did not release the names of the driver or passengers involved in the collision.
