Breaking News Overnight: Bicyclist hit and killed by van in DeSoto County

Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol responded to a collision last night in DeSoto County that resulted in the death of a bicyclist.

According to the FHP report, a van driven by a 43-year-old Okeechobee man was traveling north on the inside northbound lane of US-17 (SR-35), approaching the intersection of SW Skates Street.

At the same time, a 40-year-old Wauchula man riding a bicycle was traveling north on the inside paved shoulder of US-17 (SR-35), approaching the intersection of SW Skates Street.

As they approached, the bicyclist entered the inside northbound lane of US-17 (SR-35) as the van approached. The front of the vehicle collided with the bicycle.

The bicycle was pronounced deceased on the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.

The FHP did not release the names of the driver or bicyclist involved in the collision.
