A 27-year-old Gainesville woman was killed Monday night after she was struck by a vehicle whose driver fled the scene on foot, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The fatal crash occurred at approximately 9:45 p.m. on St. Johns Avenue near Wes Larson Boulevard in Putnam County.
According to the FHP, a 2020 Kia Forte was traveling westbound on St. Johns Avenue when it swerved into the left portion of the two-lane roadway and struck a bicyclist.
The bicyclist, identified only as a 27-year-old Gainesville woman, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Troopers said the 35-year-old East Palatka man who was driving the Kia was not injured in the crash. Instead of remaining at the scene, the driver fled on foot before law enforcement arrived.
The Florida Highway Patrol is asking anyone with information about the crash or the whereabouts of the driver to contact investigators.
The crash remains under investigation.
