A Jacksonville woman and a 3-year-old boy were killed Thursday night after their sport utility vehicle veered off Interstate 295 and struck a tree before catching fire, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The fatal crash occurred at approximately 10:35 pm on the northbound Interstate 295 near mile marker 37 in Duval County.
According to FHP, a black Jeep was traveling north when it veered off the roadway for unknown reasons. The SUV continued off the highway until it collided with a tree.
Troopers said the vehicle became engulfed in flames following the impact.
The 42-year-old Jacksonville woman driving the SUV and her 3-year-old male passenger, also from Jacksonville, were both pronounced dead at the scene.
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the crash.
