A 56-year-old St. Augustine motorcyclist was killed Thursday night after a sedan attempting to pass another vehicle entered the southbound lane and collided with his motorcycle, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. A 56-year-old St. Augustine motorcyclist was killed Thursday night in a crash involving a sedan on Coastal Highway in St. Johns County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at approximately 11:32 pm at the intersection of Coastal Highway and Cedar Avenue.
According to FHP, both the motorcycle and a sedan were traveling north on Coastal Highway when the motorcyclist attempted to turn left onto Cedar Avenue. At the same time, the 25-year-old driver of the sedan, from Ponte Vedra Beach, entered the southbound lane while attempting to pass another vehicle and collided with the motorcycle.
The impact forced the sedan off the roadway, where it struck a Circle K gas price sign before coming to rest on the west shoulder of the highway. The motorcycle also came to rest on the west shoulder, and the rider was ejected during the crash.
The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. FHP reported that he was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. His next of kin has been notified.
The driver of the sedan was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.
The crash remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
