Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol responded to two separate yet related collisions this morning in Duval County that resulted in the death of a driver and pedestrian.
According to the FHP report, at approximately 2 am, a 31-year-old Jacksonville man driving a sport utility vehicle was traveling eastbound on Interstate 10 west of State Road 129 (McDuff Ave).
The SUV failed to maintain its lane, causing it to collide into the concrete barrier wall on the left shoulder. The SUV overturned into the center lane of Interstate 10 eastbound. The front of V01 then struck the concrete barrier wall on the left shoulder, coming to final rest.
The driver was pronounced deceased on the scene.
Approximately nine minutes later, a 23-year-old Jacksonville man driving a sedan was traveling eastbound on Interstate 10 west of State Road 129 and stopped to render aid regarding the previous crash that had occurred moments earlier at the same location.
The driver exited his vehicle (now classified as a pedestrian) and was struck by a vehicle, which then collided with the concrete barrier wall on the right shoulder and the concrete barrier wall on the left shoulder, coming to final rest.
The driver of that vehicle fled the scene on foot.
The pedestrian was pronounced deceased on the scene of the traffic crash.
The FHP did not release the names of the drivers or pedestrians involved in the collision.
