Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol responded to a two-vehicle collision in Nassau County last night that involved a Nassau County Sheriff's Cruiser and resulted in serious injuries to both drivers.

According to the FHP report, a Nassau County Sheriff's Department Deputy was responding to back up another deputy on I-95. The deputy was in a fully marked patrol vehicle and had his emergency lights and siren activated. The deputy was traveling westbound on State Road 200, approaching the intersection of Mentoria Road.

At the same time, a 79-year-old Safety Harbor woman driving a sedan proceeded to cross State Road 200 from Mentoria Road, failing to observe the NCSD vehicle approaching, traveled into its path, and the two vehicles collided.

The deputy and the driver of the sedan were transported to UF Health in Jacksonville with non-life-threatening injuries. Both are in serious condition.

The FHP did not release the names of the deputy or the other driver involved in the collision.
