Jacksonville pedestrian dies after being struck twice on I-295 entrance ramp

A 70-year-old Jacksonville man died Tuesday night after he was struck by two vehicles while crossing an entrance ramp to Interstate 295, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at approximately 9:14 pm on the I-295 entrance ramp from Merrill Road in Duval County. Troopers said the man was attempting to cross the roadway in a marked crosswalk when he was struck by a southbound Toyota Camry.

According to the FHP, the front right side of the Camry struck the pedestrian, throwing him onto the grass shoulder.

Investigators said the driver of a Ford F-150 stopped to assist the Camry's driver following the collision. As the pickup truck pulled onto the grass shoulder, it inadvertently ran over the pedestrian.

The 70-year-old man was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His next of kin had not been notified when the report was released.

The Camry was driven by a 62-year-old Jacksonville man, and the pickup truck by a 47-year-old Jacksonville man. Neither driver was injured in the incident, and both were wearing seat belts.

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
