Updating Breaking News: Driver dies after a single-vehicle collision in Charlotte County

Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol responded to a single-vehicle collision in Charlotte County last night, resulting in the driver's death.

According to the FHP report, a 70-year-old man from Port Charlotte, driving a 2015 Toyota vehicle, was traveling south on Tamiami Trail, approaching a curve near the intersection of Stratford Drive.

As he advanced, the driver lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the roadway to the right, collided with an embankment, became airborne, landed in a small pond, collided with a large blue water pipe, and came to rest halfway submerged.

The driver was pronounced deceased on scene.

The crash remains under investigation.

The FHP did not release the name of the deceased driver involved in the crash.
