Updating Breaking News: FHP arrests driver involved in fatal head-on collision in Lee County

Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol arrested a driver in a fatal 2024 collision and charged him with DUI Manslaughter.

According to the FHP release, on September 29, 2024, 86-year-old Larry Wayne Farmer was driving a 2010 Chevy Tahoe south within the northbound lanes (the wrong way) on Interstate 75, near mile marker 139.

At the same time, a 2021 Ford Bronco driven by a 56-year-old Bradenton woman was northbound on I-75 near Mile Marker 139, within the left lane.

As they advanced, both drivers swerved their vehicles towards the west paved shoulder of the roadway to avoid collision, but collided head-on.

Farmer sustained serious injuries and was transported to Gulf Coast Medical Center.

The driver of the second vehicle sustained serious injuries, was transported to Gulf Coast Medical Center, and was later pronounced deceased.

On July 29, 2025, after an exhaustive investigation, FHP Troopers arrested Farmer for DUI Manslaughter, Vehicular Homicide, Driving While License Revoked Causing Death, DUI Causing Property Damage x2, and booked him into the Lee County Jail.

The FHP did not release the name of the second driver involved in the collision.
