A 41-year-old St. Augustine man was killed Tuesday night when an SUV struck his motorized scooter from behind on State Road 16, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at approximately 10 p.m. on August 18 near Downs Corner Road in St. Johns County.

FHP said the SUV and scooter were traveling west on State Road 16 when the SUV’s right front bumper struck the rear of the scooter.

The impact pushed the scooter onto the grassy shoulder. The scooter and its rider came to rest in a ditch on the right side of the highway.

The rider was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not released.

According to the crash report, the SUV continued west and did not remain at the scene. A 47-year-old St. Augustine woman was listed as the driver of the SUV and was not injured.

The report did not indicate whether police located the driver or filed charges.
