Breaking News this Morning: 17-year-old bicyclist hit and killed by school bus in Lake County

Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol responded to a collision in Lake County that resulted in the death of a 17-year-old bicyclist.

According to the FHP report, at approximately 6:50 am, a Lake County School District bus was traveling southbound on Hancock Road approaching Fox Trail Avenue in the left turn lane. At the same time a 17-year-old male Minneola resident riding a bicycle was traveling north on the northbound sidewalk of Hancock Road approaching Fox Trail Avenue.

As the bus approached the stop sign at the intersection, the bicyclist entered the marked crosswalk. The bus driver attempted to make a left turn to enter Lake Minneola High School, observed the bicyclist in the crosswalk and swerved to the left. During this motion, the front of the bus hit the bicycle and continued off the roadway to the left, struck a stop sign and chain link fence.

The bus driver and passengers were not transported, remained on scene, and reported no injuries to the FHP.

The bicyclist was transported to South Lake Hospital and pronounced deceased.

This crash remains under investigation.

The FHP did not release the names of the bus driver, the passengers on the bus or the bicyclist.
