Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol responded to a three-vehicle collision in Duval County this morning that resulted in the death of a motorcyclist.
According to the FHP report, at approximately 8:53 am, a 32-year-old Jonesboro, GA, resident was riding a motorcycle northbound on US-17 at a high rate of speed. At the same time, a sedan driven by a 65-year-old Jacksonville woman and a 42-year-old Jacksonville man, also driving a sedan, were stopped for a red traffic light on US-17 northbound at the intersection of New Berlin Road.
The motorcycle operator failed to stop and struck the rear of the second vehicle, forcing it forward and causing it to collide with the rear of the third vehicle.
All three vehicles traveled a short distance and came to final rest, blocking the northbound travel lanes of US17 and the intersection of New Berlin Road.
The second and third vehicle drivers were transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
The operator of the motorcycle sustained fatal injuries as a result of this collision and was pronounced deceased on the scene.
The FHP did not release the names of the drivers or motorcyclist involved in the crash.
