Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol responded to a two-vehicle collision in Lafayette County yesterday that resulted in the death of two passengers and injuries to six others.
According to the FHP report, at approximately 4:07 pm, a sedan driven by a 23-year-old Mayo woman was traveling northbound on US 27. At the same time, a Lafayette County Sheriff's Office marked patrol vehicle (SUV) was traveling southbound on US 27.
During a period of rain and for reasons still under investigation, the sedan lost control and crossed into the southbound travel lane into the path of the patrol vehicle. The right front of the vehicle struck the right side of the sedan. The sedan had been occupied by two adults in the front, and the rear seat was occupied by five juveniles ranging in age from 5 to 15 years old.
The right front passenger and four of the juveniles were ejected from the sedan during this crash. A male 15-year-old was pronounced deceased on scene. The driver of the sedan was transported to HCA Florida Live Oak Hospital. Everyone else involved was transported to UF Health. A female 13 year old was later pronounced deceased at UF Health.
The LCSO Deputy, a 45-year-old Mayo man, suffered serious injuries, according to the report.
